Quantifying the Sub-optimality of Uniprocessor Fixed Priority Pre-emptive Scheduling for Sporadic Tasksets with Arbitrary Deadlines

چکیده
This paper examines the relative effectiveness of fixed priority pre-emptive scheduling in a uniprocessor system, compared to an optimal algorithm such as Earliest Deadline First (EDF). The quantitative metric used in this comparison is the processor speedup factor, defined as the factor by which processor speed needs to increase to ensure that any taskset that is schedulable according to an optimal scheduling algorithm can be scheduled using fixed priority pre-emptive scheduling. For implicit-deadline tasksets, the speedup factor is 1/ln(2) . For constrained-deadline tasksets, the speedup factor is . In this paper, we show that for arbitrarydeadline tasksets, the speedup factor is lower bounded by and upper bounded by 2. Further, when deadline monotonic priority assignment is used, we show that the speedup factor is exactly 2. 1.44270 ≈

Quantifying the Sub-optimality of Uniprocessor Fixed Priority Non-Pre-emptive Scheduling
This paper examines the relative effectiveness of fixed priority non-pre-emptive scheduling (FP-NP) in a uniprocessor system, compared to an optimal workconserving non-pre-emptive algorithm; Earliest Deadline First (EDF-NP). The quantitative metric used in this comparison is the processor speedup factor, defined as the factor by which processor speed needs to increase to ensure that any taskset...
متن کاملQuantifying the sub-optimality of uniprocessor fixed-priority scheduling∗
There are sporadic task systems schedulable by EDF, which no fixed-priority (FP) algorithm can schedule successfully. For instance, it is known that while all implicit-deadline sporadic task systems with utilization at most one are EDF-schedulable on a unit-capacity uniprocessor, there are implicit-deadline sporadic task systems that are not schedulable by any FP algorithm, and have utilization...
متن کاملOptimal Priority Assignment for Aperiodic Tasks with Firm Deadlines in Fixed Priority Pre-Emptive Systems
An optimal priority assignment policy is presented for independent aperiodic tasks with arbitrary ready times and firm deadlines, scheduled on a uniprocessor along with a set of hard periodic/sporadic tasks. The latter tasks are assumed to have been assigned unique fixed priorities according to some arbitrary policy and guaranteed, via off-line feasibility analysis, to meet their deadlines. In ...
متن کاملMultiprocessor Schedulability Analysis for Self - Suspending Task Systems ∗
In many real-time systems, tasks may experience suspension delays. The problem of analyzing task systems with such suspensions on multiprocessors has been relatively unexplored and is thought to be difficult (as it is on uniprocessors). In this paper, hard/soft multiprocessor schedulability tests for arbitrary-deadline sporadic self-suspending task systems are presented for both global EDF and ...
متن کاملExact best-case response time analysis of real-time tasks under fixed-priority pre-emptive scheduling for arbitrary deadlines
In this paper, we present a conjecture for exact best-case response times of periodic released, independent real-time tasks with arbitrary deadlines that are scheduled by means of fixed-priority pre-emptive scheduling (FPPS). We illustrate the analysis by means of an example. Apart from having a value on its own whenever timing constraints include lower bounds on response times of a system to e...
